I think America is. While perhaps an individual might feel their religion is being "spat upon" by the idea, that individual must remember their beliefs do not reflect every persons. What if someone's religion said that only gay people should be married while straight people must settle for civil unions? Society certainly would not allow that religion some/any sway with established law, but when gay marriage comes up Christianity seems to have this sway. While Christianity is a completely valid belief system which I respect immensely (and am often envious of due to the spiritual fulfillment practicing Christians seem to enjoy), the first amendment guarantees the right to freedom of religion and the establishment clause says the government can not make a law aiding the establishment (or the disestablishment) of any religion, which would include establishing a law against homosexuals. I understand the counterargument to this, "church's should not be forced to marry two individuals that the church does not want to", but I assure any individuals of this persuasion the gay community does not want to be married by people who do not want to marry two gay people. The gay community could turn to others without violating the sanctity of a Christian marriage, courthouses have the ability to marry two individuals, so with the separation of church and state our forefathers established should this option really be closed to homosexuals? At the very least, civil unions could (in special cases such as two gay individuals wanting to be joined) have the same legally binding effects upon the individuals joined as a traditional marriage. How can society truly deny someone their happiness?
"These people who are making a big deal out of gay marriage? I don't give a f*** about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not? We're making a big deal out of things we shouldn't be making a deal out of. They go on and on with all this bulls*** about 'sanctity'-- don't give me that sanctity crap! Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want" ~ Clint Eastwood
"As a Baptist Minister, I don't have the right to impose my views on anyone else. If committed gay and lesbian couples want to marry, that is their business; none of us should stand in their way" ~ Rev. Al Sharpton
"If anybody can find someone to love them and to help them through this difficult thing that we call life, I support that in any shape or form" ~Will Smith
